Sharrett founder’s love of cars was a basis for family business.
Ralph L. Sharrett had nothing but a love of cars when he got into the automobile business in 1938. He purchased a Ford dealership in Manassas, Va., where he grew up.He was 26 when he borrowed $1,400 and bought the entire dealership.
In 1940, he acquired Hughes Motor Co. at 30 East Baltimore St. in HagerstownMD. and changed the name to Sharrett Motors. Sharrett then moved the dealership to 1317 Dual Highway in 1953. He began selling European imports- Saabs, Volvos, Triumphs and Renaults and of course Volkswagens.
Volkswagen lists Sharrett as the Second-Oldest of its 600 plus American Dealerships. A history of Sharrett milestone notes that a brand new Volkswagen in 1954 sold for 1,200.
Today, Sharrett is made up of Volkswagen, Mazda and Subaru dealerships and Pontiac, Buick and GMC dealerships at the I70 Auto Mall. The Company has grown from 10 employees to more then 100 today. Still Family-owned and operated. We invite you to be a part of the Family!
